UK AND US SABOTAGING ERITREA'S EFFORT TO ECONOMIC EMANCIPATION

By Kidane Eyob

On the 8th October 2009, the UK Ambassador to the UN John Sawers, called for sanctions to be applied against Eritrea for unsubstantiated and unfounded allegations that Eritrea supplies weapons to the opponents of the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) in Somalia in violation of a U.N. arms embargo.

In his speech, he made references to the evidences fabricated by the UN Monitoring Unit that was established by the disgraced Bush Administration and Engineered by a failed Diplomat, Dr Jendayie Frazer who on several occasions was exposed as avowed enemy of Eritrea.

First and foremost, these so called evidences have neither been independently verified nor presented to the international community for reasons that have not be disclosed, however; some of the accusations include but are not limited to the allegations that Eritrea had 2000 soldiers in Somalia supporting the opponents of the Transitional Federal Government. These allegations were proved to be fabricated beyond any doubt.

This is a classic example of ''when you tell a lie tell a big lie'' and very similar to the Weapons of Mass Distraction (WMD) fiasco, that Iraq had WMD and had the capability of attacking Britain within 45 minutes.

Who in his/her right mind would believe such stories?

We all know the real reason why US and UK attacked Iraq. It is not to destroy this mysterious WMD that suddenly evaporated into thin air.

But why would US and UK desperately seek legitimacy to apply sanctions against Eritrea? And why would the UK Ambassador make this call now several months after the so called evidences have been fabricated?

In my opinion it is simple and crystal clear. Eritrea is a good BAD example to African countries as well as to other third world countries in other continents that are plagued by poverty, diseases, ignorance and corruption in spite of their rich natural resources. These countries are desperately seeking alternative economic, social and political policies because those prescribed by US and UK have miserably failed and they are closely watching Eritrea.

Against all the odds, Eritrea achieved its independence after a protracted 30 years armed struggle defeating the biggest army in Africa without the support of the superpowers and other countries. After independence, Eritrea asserted its pragmatic political, economic and social policies and steadily began to develop with impressive records until this trend was suddenly sabotaged in 1998 when Ethiopia declared war on Eritrea under the pretext of a border dispute. This war was yet another sabotage that was definitely not engineered by the regime in Ethiopia. Repeated efforts to foil Eritrea's independence both politically and economically failed miserably and humiliated those who engineered and plotted these conspiracies.

In the present international economic uncertainties, recession and credit crunch, for the UK Ambassador to the UN John Sawers to renew calls initially made by the disgraced Bush Administration for sanctions to be applied against Eritrea is unacceptable and its only desire is to sabotage the efforts of the Eritrean people's to economic emancipation. They want to force the Eritrean government to abide by their rules as well as be intimidated by the carrot and stick approach which the Obama Administration is keen to employ as an effective methodology in dealing with its foreign policy challenges.

At present, Eritrea is at a very crucial juncture in its history when against all the odds and since the conflict with Ethiopia began in 1998 continued to exist as an independent country both economically and politically and is on the verge of economic emancipation. The various developments achieved by Eritrea in the construction of vital infrastructures in agriculture, education, health, fisheries and mining have become a nightmare to the Enemies of Eritrea.

Some economically influential countries as well as Multinational organisations have defied the advice given by US and UK governments not to engage with Eritrea for allegedly non existent security reasons. However, these organisations have after careful consideration and professional assessment of the realities on the ground decided to invest in Eritrea in partnership with the Eritrean government and in defiance to the inaccurate diplomatic advice. In a matter of months both these organisations and the Eritrean people will become the beneficiaries of the abundant natural resources in Eritrea and for the first time in the history of Africa, poverty will be made history in Eritrea.

US and UK are desperately seeking to sabotage the making of history in Africa, where for the first time in the history of this continent, there is a country that is economically and politically independent, free from corruption, no ethnic and religious conflict despite the fact that the population is 50% Christians and 50% Muslims. Furthermore Eritrea has a clear vision and pragmatic short and long term programmes that wholly rely on its human resources. Finally but more importantly Eritrea passionately believes and practises principles of self reliance.

In the very near future, African countries and those in other continents will realise that they too can achieve what Eritrea has in a short space of time so watch the space……..

For the benefit of those who are not well informed about Eritrea's history, let me briefly refer to the historical facts, conspiracies, plots and intrigues masterminded by US and UK and the subsequent political and security implications in Eritrea since the1950s.

.When the case of Eritrea and other ex-Italy colonies in Africa (Somalia and Libya) was presented to the UN in early1950s, US and UK abused their veto power in the UN to deny the Eritrean people their fundamental right to self determination and independence.
. During the following ten years of British Military Administration (BMA), the British Army dismantled the economic infrastructures built during decades of Italian colonialism and looted various assets including railway tracks, Manufacturing industries, Warehouses etc. According to a British Historian at the time known as Silvia Punkhurst these assets were estimated to be worth £ 80 million. Apparently these crimes were committed to justify the claims by UK that Eritrea can not economically and independently exist as a country in Africa.
. It was during this period that the BMA suggested dividing Eritrea into two, along ethnic and religious lines. As such the plan was for the highlands to join Ethiopia and for the lowlands to join Sudan and in the process prevent the very birth and existence of an independent Eritrea.
. At the end of a ten year BMA in Eritrea, US and UK abused their veto powers in the UN to force the Eritrean people into a federation with Ethiopia.
.Both US and UK watched in silence when Ethiopia violated the UN resolution that federated Eritrea with Ethiopia and finally annexed Eritrea making her the 14th province of Ethiopia.
. They ignored the Eritrean people's call for a legal and peaceful solution to the annexation and crimes committed by Ethiopia against the Eritrean people.
. Ignored the dismantling of the social, political and economic establishments in Eritrea by Haileselassie regime. When Eritrea fell under the control of the BMA she was one of the most developed countries in Africa with modern manufacturing and agricultural industries as well as efficient and effective railway transport network. Furthermore Eritrea had a multiparty political system, free press and a well established trade union which were later destroyed by Ethiopia.
. They ignored the suffering of the Eritrean people by successive oppressive regimes in Ethiopia. This includes but is not limited to the blanket aerial bombardments of rural areas forcing hundreds of thoUSnds of people to flee and seek refuge in Sudan, killings and torturing of farmers, professionals and students suspected of supporting the Eritrean struggle for independence.
.Both US and UK supported successive oppressive government in Ethiopia militarily and financially. These weapons included Napalm and Cluster bombs that were made unlawful to use were used by Ethiopia to kill Eritreans.
. Ignored calls made by EPLF during the armed struggle to bring a legal and peaceful solution to the conflict with Ethiopia.
. Ex US President Jimmy Carter and his advisors conspired to act as peace mediators when they were both biased and against the Eritrean people's fundamental right to self determination.
.They advised Melles Zenawi to disagree with the principle of the Eritrean People to determine their political destiny through an internationally monitored referendum.
. They failed to condemn the regime in Ethiopia when it declared an out right war against Eritrea following the border dispute.
.They failed to condemn Ethiopia leave alone apply sanctions when Ethiopia rejected the EEBC final and binding decision.
. In fact the UK government shortly after Ethiopia rejected the Final and Binding EEBC ruling tripled its development aid to Ethiopia from £ 30 million to £100 million a year and appointed Melles to be a member of the newly established Commission for Africa.
.To deny Eritrean people the right to visit their relatives, both the US and UK embassies in Eritrea have long stopped processing visitors' visas and people in Eritrea are forced to travel to Kenya, Sudan or other countries in the region to seek visitor's visa to the US and UK from their embassies in those countries. Sadly the vast majority of applicants are being rejected for reasons that are not valid.
. Recently, the Eritrean Athletes Team including the World half-marathon Champion Zersenay Taddesse were initially denied visa to the UK by the Diplomatic Mission in Kenya and the IAAF had to intervene to reverse this unjust decision. Due to this unnecessary delay, the team was only able to arrive in Birmingham two days before the half-marathon event. Despite this inconveniences aimed at frustrating and demoralising Eritreans, Zersenay was able to defend his world title and Eritrea stood second.

The list is endless but in good time all of the aforementioned historical facts and supporting evidences will be presented by ERITREA to the international community and when the right time comes legal action will be taken against those who have committed crimes against Eritrea and JUSTICE will prevail.
