Activity Name : Women's Forum ( Ref No : 42)

Objectives:

•  Consolidate the vision and practice of the Women's Movement in the UK

•  Strengthen the activities and organization of the NUEW

•  Motivate all Eritrean women and youth girls to be part of the process and the organization

•  Raise the participation of women and young girls in community and national activities and issues

Organization:

•  Duration and Time: The Women's Forum will take place on Saturday 31 August 2008 (14:30 - 16:30 at Bahti Meskerem Hall)

•  The Forum will be attended by all women and youth girls above the age of 19.

•  The central theme “Upbringing children, empowering Eritrean families and strengthening the role of Mothers”.

•  Depth of the discussion across the three dimensions of the them could be the following:-

•  Understanding the cultural and social context, the social psychology of children in the UK, the challenges which children face, the communication gap between parents and children, the role and responsibility of children, ways of promoting the participation of children in Eritrean cultural activities, ways of encouraging children to establish their own cultural and sport groups, etc

•  The economic and social challenges in the UK and its effect on Eritrean families, the transfer of values, role models and influences, family networking and its social and cultural impact, Eritrean communities and influence, systemic functional support to Eritrean families, single parents and challenges, etc

•  The role of mothers in the family setting and community, social and cultural capacity of women, professional and technical support to women, the role of NUEW, etc..

•  Leading questions for discussion will be prepared by the NUEW in collaboration with the Embassy and other professionals.

•  There will be four panellists who will provoke the discussion and a moderator will lead the proceedings as well. Panellists will present their own perspectives on the three dimensions of the theme (each 10 minutes) with certain recommendations to provoke and set the discussions. Participants will also be given opportunities to raise questions to the panellists and give their critical reflections on the various ideas presented.

•  Young girls could be given a side line 15 to 20 minutes to come with their own set of recommendations on their role

•  At the end the moderator will present the main issues for discussion (20 minutes) and a general conclusion will be agreed

Expected Outcomes

The Forum is expected to outline a general Framework that helps to guide the sensitization and efforts on child upbringing, strengthening the Eritrean family and the role of the women/mothers in the next 3 years (in particular in 2009). The overall plans of the NUEW will be taken as the basis for this.
