ERITREAN MARTYRS' DAY OBSERVED IN
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA
More than two hundred Eritrean Americans residing in and around Los Angeles,
California (USA) attended a special ceremony held on Saturday, June 21, 2008
at Rogers Park in Inglewood to honor Eritrean martyrs. The three-hour memorial
ceremony began with the traditional observation of a minute of silence in honor of
the martyrs and the singing of Eritrea's national anthem.
This was followed by a procession around the park by the candle carrying
participants led by Eritrean seniors. Afterwards, the gathering listened to a tape
of Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki's speech made in Asmara, Eritrea, on Friday,
June 20, on the occasion of the holiday. Habtom Debessai and Aron Tadesse,
who are Los Angeles-based famous Eritrean singers and musicians, respectively
sang special songs befitting the occasion.
Poems and messages reflecting the profound respect, love and admiration we
have towards our martyred heroes and heroines were read by several
participants. Mekete committee chairperson urged the gathering to participate in
the ongoing fundraising drive. Moreover, calls were made to sponsor the Martyrs’
families. Funds were raised for these purposes.
